Comments: This is a photo of a dead Red-bellied Woodpecker that I found in Brighton Recreation Area. The bird was frozen in the snow with it's tongue extended. In the photo you can see the hardened tip with rear-facing barbs that it uses to extract larvae from the tree. An interesting adaptation to see up close.
